How often do you need to replace breast implants?

How often do you need to replace breast implants?

How often do you need to replace breast implants? | Fairfax | McLean

A majority of women who choose breast augmentation plastic surgery today may need to replace their implants at least once in their lifetime. But this does not mean that every woman will require a replacement, or a replacement would be needed every few years.

An FDA report in 2011 showed that only about 20 percent of all women with breast implants may need to have their implants removed or replaced within the first 10 years. This means at least 80 percent of the women can expect their implants to last much longer, probably between 10 and 20 years or more.

It’s also critical to understand that this FDA report came out nearly a decade ago. The qualities of implants as well as the surgical techniques for breast augmentation have dramatically improved during this time. Therefore, this old data may no longer be valid, and most women who undergo breast augmentation today can continue to benefit from their implants for a very long time.

Board certified plastic surgeons at MBody, Dr. Burton M. Sundin and Dr. Reps B. Sundin, provide cosmetic and reconstructive procedures for the breast, body and face to patients in Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, Fredericksburg, and surrounding locations.

Medical Reasons for Implant Removal or Replacement

Breast implants do not have an expiration date, and in fact, most of the latest breast implant qualities are sold with a lifetime warranty. It is not a common occurrence to have your breast implants removed or replaced because of implant damage, leakage, or a defective implant.

Having said that, some women may develop implant related complications, which makes it a medical necessity to remove or replace the breast implants.

    Implant Rupture

If the saline implant develops a hole or crack, the saline could quickly leak out, causing the implant to deflate. This will not pose a health risk, but for aesthetic reasons, it would be necessary to remove or replace the implants.

In case of silicone implant leakage, it is best to have the implants removed or replaced so that the silicone gel does not move out to other parts of the body. Many women may only experience a ‘silent’ rupture in case of silicone implants because the thick silicone gel will usually stay inside the implant shell. The damage may only be detected during an MRI.

    Capsular Contracture

In some cases, the scar tissue that envelopes the breast implant may tend to harden and cause tightness or pain in the breast. Reasons for capsular contracture are not fully understood, but if it happens, implant removal or replacement plastic surgery may be the only option.

The surgeon may decide to perform a traditional full or partial capsulectomy or an en bloc capsulectomy, depending on the circumstances. If you only choose implant removal, you may also have to get a breast lift at the same time to restore the firmer and natural looking breast appearance.

Breast Implant Removal After Rupture / Capsular Contracture

Breast Implant Removal After Rupture / Capsular Contracture | Richmond

Breast implant removal is a plastic surgery procedure designed to reverse the primary breast augmentation. The surgery may be performed to simply remove the implants or to replace the old or damaged implants with new ones. Many women who have chosen to undergo breast augmentation are likely to go through breast implant removal or replacement at some point of time in the future.

Board certified plastic surgeons at MBody, Dr. Burton M. Sundin and Dr. Reps B. Sundin, provide cosmetic and reconstructive procedures for the breast, body and face to patients in Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, Fredericksburg, and surrounding communities.

    Candidates for Breast Implant Removal

A breast implant removal candidate could be someone who has a medical necessity to remove or replace her existing implants. Complications related to implants such as implant rupture or capsular contracture may require you to undergo breast implant removal or replacement plastic surgery.

Implant rupture can cause saline implants to deflate, while in case of silicone implants, it could create a risk of the silicone gel leaking out to other areas of the body. Therefore, breast implant removal or replacement would be recommended in either case.

Capsular contracture involves the hardening of the scar tissue surrounding the implant. This can cause tightness or pain in the breasts or the implants may lose their shape or position. Implant removal or replacement may be the only options following a capsular contracture.

    Procedure

Your surgeon will likely perform breast implant removal surgery using general anesthesia. The procedure may be completed in about one to three hours, depending on the complications and the surgical technique used. At the time of your customized surgical planning, you and your surgeon will determine whether you should undergo breast implant removal with or without a breast lift.

If your breasts have sagged and the skin has become stretched because of the implantation for several years, you may have to choose breast lift as an additional procedure. The other option may be to choose implant replacement instead of only implant removal.

For breast implant removal, your surgeon’s first goal will be to use the same incision lines which were created for the original breast augmentation surgery. This will minimize new scarring. However, if you have chosen implant replacement, a new incision may be required, especially if the new implants are of a different size or shape.

    Post-Op Recovery

Recovery timeline will vary depending on the type of surgery you have chosen. If you only had breast implant removal for saline implants, your surgeon may have created very small incisions to first deflate and then remove the saline implants. The recovery would be rapid in this case.

But if you have had a breast lift along with breast implant removal, you may need about 7 to 10 days for initial recovery. Thereafter, you can return to your regular routine and return to work.

    Consultation Process

As an out of town patient visiting the office of Dr. Sundin for your plastic surgery procedure, you have two options for your pre-surgery consultation. You may either make an initial personal visit to the office for an in-person consultation with the surgeon, or choose to have a phone and email consultation prior to your scheduled surgery.

If traveling separately just for the initial consultation is not practical, the patient coordinator at MBody will assist you with your phone and email consultation with the surgeon. You will have to send in your patient forms, medical history and pictures of your areas to be treated for the review of the surgeon.

Following the review of your material, the surgeon will have a detailed consultation with you over phone or Skype as may be convenient to you. Feel free to ask questions and clear all your concerns and doubts during the consultation. With your cooperation and the assistance of the patient coordinator, a phone and email consultation can be as productive and successful as a face to face consultation.

    Travel Plans

Once you have made up your mind about going ahead with the procedure at MBody, you can schedule a surgery date of mutual convenience with the patient coordinator. Try to plan your visit to Dr. Sundin’s office at least a day before the surgery so that you can familiarize yourself with the team and resolve any last-minute questions or concerns.

Depending on the type of your surgery, Dr. Sundin will guide you about the estimated recovery timeline. You should generally plan to stay in the city for about five to seven days before you are ready to travel back to your home. You will receive aftercare instructions and support from Dr. Sundin’s office.

It is best if you can have someone accompany you on the surgery day and also stay with you for at least the first 24 to 48 hours after the procedure to assist you with the chores.
