In 2015, Kybella was approved by the FDA as the first and only injectable treatment to reduce submental fat below the chin. The procedure avoids the need for liposuction plastic surgery, and helps to create a sculpted neck and chin using an innovative injectable procedure.
Although the FDA has currently approved Kybella only for the reduction of fat below the chin, a number of researchers and treatment experts see significant benefits of Kybella for a variety of off-label areas where stubborn fat tissue can be reduced without surgery.
Board certified plastic surgeons at MBody provide Kybella injections to patients in Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, Fredricksburg, and surrounding communities.
How does Kybella Work?
Kybella is a synthesized version of a bile salt that supports the process of natural fat digestion in the body. This cytolytic medication is injected into the targeted layers of subcutaneous fat, and it works to disintegrate the cell membrane of unwanted fat cells. This causes adipolysis and the stubborn fat cells are eliminated.
The released fat is naturally absorbed by the body, while Kybella is metabolized and exits from the body in natural course. Re-treatment is not required because the fat cells treated with Kybella injections are permanently destroyed. Patients can gain a smoother, more sculpted appearance in the treated area without involving plastic surgery.
According to several experts, Kybella may be an equally effective fat reduction solution for other isolated pockets of unwanted fat in the body. These may include:
- Axillary fat or armpit pooches
- Back fat
- Bra bulge or fat above the breast
- Inner knee fat on top or medial side of the knee
- Lower buttock fatty folds
- Outer thigh saddlebags
In addition to these specific relatively smaller areas where fat bulges usually occur, Kybella injections may also be used to treat larger fat deposit areas such as the abdomen and hips. Liposuction in larger areas may sometimes lead to irregularities or small bumps or lumps, and Kybella may help to smooth out and mitigate them. Therefore, a plastic surgeon may also use a combination of liposuction and Kybella injections to achieve more comprehensive and uniform looking results.
Combining with CoolSculpting
Some patients may want to avoid liposuction for specific areas such as love handles, or may have only limited fat bulge in such areas requiring smaller corrections. Such patients may choose Kybella injections as an independent treatment or combine it with CoolSculpting non-invasive procedure.
CoolSculpting or other fat reduction treatments may sometimes leave a marginal edge where the treated was performed. These edges can be softened effectively with Kybella treatment. While CoolSculpting is highly effective, it may only reduce fat in areas where the applicator head is used.
Therefore, fat tissue conditions such as hanging fatty tissue under the arms, the top area of the knee, or areas that are difficult to treatment with liposuction or CoolSculpting can be addressed successfully with targeted Kybella injections. This injectable treatment can also be combined with body lift surgery or circumferential brachial arm reduction to achieve more effective results in a less invasive way.
